Shizuoka Local 2030 Hub Student Meeting 2024
Shizuoka City, the only "Local2030 Hub" in Asia,
held an online international exchange event for high school students
on Friday 2 August 2024 from 11時00分 AM to 12時00分 PM!
Event Overview
A total of fifty high school students from Shizuoka City (Japan), Taipei (Taiwan), Hue (Vietnam), and Hobart (Australia) gathered for this online event. The theme of their discussions was "SDGs Initiatives High School Students Have Found in Their Communities." Each group of students presented the efforts being made in their respective cities and schools to their international peers, all in English.
Objectives
- To foster a culture of action towards the SDGs, with Shizuoka City leading the way in sharing information and initiatives with other cities as a Local2030 Hub.
- To strengthen relationships with international cities and raise awareness among local youth about global issues, using English not as a goal but as a tool.

Presentation Examples
【Shizuoka City: Conservation of Miho no Matsubara】
At the scenic site of Miho no Matsubara, littering has harmed wildlife and marred the landscape. Volunteers conduct clean-up activities every Saturday from 10時00分 AM to 11時30分 AM to preserve this natural treasure.
【Taipei City: Eco-Friendly Transportation】
Taipei boasts an advanced network of electric buses, Ubike (rental bicycles), and the MRT (Metro Taipei), all contributing to a significant reduction in CO2 emissions. By limiting car usage, the city aims to prevent air pollution from exhaust fumes.
【Hue City: Water Stations in Tourist Areas】
To combat the issue of single-use plastic bottles, Hue has installed free water stations in tourist spots. Visitors are encouraged to carry reusable bottles or drink directly from the tap, reducing plastic waste.
【Hobart City: Mobile Services for the Impoverished】
A non-profit organization in Hobart operates a mobile service that provides meals, drinks, and companionship to the homeless and those in need. Dominic College even offers a class where students prepare meals for donation.
A common theme across all cities was the focus on “Nature Conservation," “Plastic Bottle Waste Reduction," and “Addressing Food Waste and Poverty." Some students also brought up topics like “Academics" and “Gender," which are particularly relevant to high schoolers. The participants confidently shared their well-prepared presentations and listened intently to the initiatives introduced by their peers. It was heartwarming to see the students, who were initially nervous about interacting with others from different cities, end the event with bright smiles. We hope this event sparks a lasting interest in the SDGs among the younger generation and inspires them to take action.
